Barcode labels

Barcode label printing software for price and barcode labels

PointLit prints price and barcode labels from the Barcode Printer screen. Scan or search to fill a print basket, or send a whole delivery there from a goods receipt, then print on a label printer through the PointLit Windows app or from the browser's print dialog. Labels can carry Arabic text, the price, the size and colour, and the barcode.

Labels that come from the same records as the till

A label is only useful if the till reads it. PointLit prints the barcode stored on the product, so the label, the stock card and the sale all point at the same item. If your products have no barcodes yet, the Barcode rule defines how new products get one, so nobody types 13 digits by hand. Barcodes print as EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8 or Code 128, and PointLit picks the one that fits the code unless you choose.

What a label can show

Label designs are built from fields you place and size yourself. A clothing label might show the model number, the size and colour, the price and the barcode. A grocery shelf label might show the full name and the price per unit.

  • Product name, Variant (for example size and colour) or Full name
  • Price, and a Was price for markdowns
  • Barcode and Barcode digits
  • SKU, Supplier code, Model number, Collection code or Collection name
  • Attributes, Unit, Business name, Store name and your Logo
  • Free Text and a Divider line

Arabic on labels, printed correctly

Label printers that take raw printer commands usually cannot draw Arabic letters. PointLit does not ask them to. It lays the label out, shapes the Arabic text and turns the whole label into a picture before it reaches the printer. TSPL, ZPL and ESC/POS label printers all receive that picture, so an Arabic product name prints as Arabic, and a product name can never be mistaken for a printer command.

Printers and connections

Label printing runs through the PointLit Windows app, which can reach a label printer through its Windows printer driver, the Windows print spooler, a serial port or the shop's local network. Without the Windows app, labels print from the browser's print dialog to any printer the computer has. Start from the Blank 50 × 30 mm roll design, or set the size your rolls use. Tell us your label printer model at support@pointlit.com before you rely on it, because testing on physical devices is still going on.

How it works in PointLit

  1. Open Barcode Printer. Scan a barcode, or type a name or SKU, to add a label to the basket.
  2. Or send labels to the basket from Products, or from a goods receipt so every piece that arrived gets one.
  3. Set how many labels each line needs.
  4. Pick the label design and the printer, then print.

Questions and answers

Can PointLit print barcode labels in Arabic?
Yes. PointLit turns each label into a picture after shaping the Arabic text, and the printer receives that picture rather than text commands. That is why Arabic prints correctly on TSPL, ZPL and ESC/POS label printers that would otherwise print question marks, and on printers driven through the Windows driver or the browser's print dialog.
Which label printers work with PointLit?
Label printers that speak TSPL, ZPL or ESC/POS, and printers with a Windows driver, through the PointLit Windows app. Without the app, labels print from the browser's print dialog. Testing on physical devices is still going on, so tell us your printer model at support@pointlit.com before you buy one or rely on the one you have.
My products have no barcodes. Can PointLit create them?
Yes. Set up a Barcode rule and new products get a barcode automatically, so nobody has to invent or type 13 digits. Print labels for them from the Barcode Printer screen and stick them on, and the till will scan them like any manufacturer's barcode.
Can I print labels for a whole delivery?
Yes. From a goods receipt, send the delivered items to the label basket, and each line arrives with the quantity that came in, so every piece gets a label. You can change the number of labels per line before you print, for example when some items already carry a manufacturer barcode.
