Pay at the table: guests pay the check by card from their phone
Pay at the table lets a guest pay the check, or their part of it, by card from the table's QR page, through your restaurant's own Paymob merchant account.
The money goes from the guest's card straight to your Paymob account. PointLit never holds it, and your staff never see the card. Paymob is the payment company PointLit works with for this, and you need a Paymob merchant account of your own, the QR menu switched on, and the keys from your Paymob dashboard.
Before you start
- A Paymob merchant account for your business, with its live keys.
- Restaurant and café switched on, and the QR menu switched on: the guest's Pay button sits on the table's QR page.
- Tips switched on in Restaurant settings, with suggested percentages, if guests should be able to add a tip.
- If Restaurant settings says this server has no payment company set up, pay at the table is not available on your PointLit yet. Write to support@pointlit.com.
Enter and check your Paymob keys
- Open Manage, then Restaurant settings, and find Pay at the table. Only someone allowed to manage the business's settings can do this; the Owner and Manager roles can as standard.
- Under Payment company account, keep Keys on Live. Test keys are not accepted on pointlit.app, because a guest would pay test money for real food.
- Copy from your Paymob dashboard the Public key, the Secret key, the HMAC secret and the Integration IDs (card, wallet), separated by commas.
- Press Save keys, then Check the keys. PointLit asks Paymob whether the keys work and shows Keys checked with the time.
- Switch on Guests pay at the table and press Save. It cannot be switched on before the keys are checked.
What the guest sees
- On the table's QR page the guest presses Pay, next to Ask for the bill.
- They choose what to pay: the whole check, or one unpaid part if the check was split.
- The page shows the subtotal, the service charge if there is one, the tax and the total.
- If tips are on, they choose a suggested tip, a percentage of the subtotal, or No tip.
- Pay with the amount opens Paymob's secure page, where the guest pays by card, or by mobile wallet if you entered a wallet integration ID.
- Back on the menu page, it checks the payment and shows Paid. Thank you! If the payment fails or the page times out, nothing is taken and the check stays open.
On the till
While a guest is on Paymob's page, the check is locked, so the till cannot take a second payment for it at the same time. If the till started taking payment first, the guest is told the check is being paid at the till. When Paymob confirms the payment, PointLit writes the sale with the payment method Paid online, and the tip goes to the check's waiter, as a tip taken at the till does. The till itself never takes a card payment through Paymob.
Refunds
When you refund a bill that was paid at the table, PointLit sends the money back to the guest's card through Paymob as standard. A full refund within 12 hours of the payment is sent as a cancellation of the payment, and the tip goes back with it.
If Paymob does not take a refund, it is listed under Online refunds not sent in the Pay at the table settings, with the bill and the amount. Press Send again, or pay the guest back in cash.
Matching Paymob's payouts
The Pay at the table settlement report, under Reports, lists every payment from a table: when, the check and the table, the status, the amount, the tip, what was refunded, the bill, Paymob's transaction and anything that does not match. By day, it shows the attempts, the payments, the tips, the refunds and what is owed by the payment company, so you can compare it with Paymob's payouts. It shows only while pay at the table is on, and it is not in the Starter plan's reports.
Questions and answers
- Does PointLit hold the guests' money?
- No. The guest pays on Paymob's page, and the money goes to your own Paymob merchant account. PointLit only records the payment as a sale, and neither PointLit nor your staff see the card.
- Which payment companies can I use?
- Paymob, with a merchant account in your business's name. You enter its keys in Restaurant settings, and PointLit checks them before pay at the table can be switched on.
- What if a guest pays at the table while the cashier takes payment for the same check?
- It cannot happen twice. While the guest is on Paymob's page the check is locked, and the till's payment is refused until Paymob answers. If the till started first, the guest's page says the check is being paid at the till.
