Splitting, moving and merging checks in PointLit

A check in PointLit can be split into parts that are each paid as a separate sale, moved to another table, merged with other tables, or lose some of its items to another check.

All of this starts from Check options at the foot of an open check. Every split and every move reaches the other tills and phones of the shop, and the parts of a split always add up exactly to the check's total.

The ways to split a check

  • By item: tick the lines that go into a part, then press Add to part. On a till you can also drag lines between the two panes, or press Space to tick a line and Enter to add the ticked lines.
  • By seat: each seat becomes a part. It needs items on at least two seats.
  • Evenly: choose how many parts under Split into. Each part pays an equal share of the check total. When the total does not divide exactly, some parts are 0.01 less, and the screen says how many.
  • By amount: press Pay an amount and type what one guest pays. Each amount part pays its amount, and the last part pays what is left.
  • One item shared: in By item, open the item's menu, choose Share between parts… and tick the parts. Each ticked part pays an equal share of that item.

Pay each part as its own sale

  1. Open the check, press Check options and choose Split check.
  2. Choose the way to split at the top and build the parts. Undo and Redo work while you build.
  3. Press Pay part 1. The payment opens for that part only, with a tip if tips are switched on.
  4. Once it is paid, the part shows its own bill number and View the receipt. Pay the next part the same way.
  5. Lines still Not assigned go into one more part when you pay a part or press Done, so nothing is left behind.

Changing or cancelling a split

Cancel split puts the check back exactly as it was. It is offered only until the first part is paid. After a payment the paid parts cannot change, and items move only between the parts that are not paid yet. A part that someone is paying on another device shows Being paid on another device until that payment ends.

Move a check to another table

For a table's check, press Check options, or More actions on the table in the floor view, and choose Move check, then pick the new table. If that table already has a check, choose Merge into it, or Add as a second check: one table can hold several checks. Tapping a table with several checks asks which one to open, or offers a new check on it. Right after a move, Undo puts the check back.

Merge tables, and move single items

Merge tables joins the checks of other tables into this one: pick the tables, then press Merge. Unmerge tables separates them again, each check with its own items, tables and guests.

To move only some items, open an item's menu and choose Move to another check…, tick the items, and choose where they go: a check on this table, another table, or a new check. Voided items stay where they are.

Who can do what

  • Splitting a check, merging tables and moving items need the permission checks:split (Split a check into parts). As standard, the Owner, Manager, Cashier and Waiter roles have it.
  • Moving a whole check to another table needs only checks:operate, the permission to open checks and add items.
  • Change waiter hands a check, its tips and its table to another member of staff. It needs checks:transfer, which the Owner and Manager roles have as standard, and every change is written to the audit log.

Questions and answers

Does each part of a split check get its own receipt?
Yes. Each part is paid as its own sale, with its own bill number, its own payments and its own receipt. Together the parts always come to the check's total exactly.
Can I split a check again after one part is paid?
No. After the first payment, Cancel split is no longer offered and the check cannot be split again. You can still move items between the parts that are not paid yet.
What happens if the internet drops while I split a check?
The split is kept on the device and sent when the connection is back, so the work is not lost.
