Sending to the kitchen, firing courses and printing the pre-bill
Send to kitchen sends a check's new items to the stations that make them, and Pre-bill prints the check for the guests before they pay.
Each item goes to the kitchen stations its product is routed to, as a printed ticket, on a kitchen screen, or both. A pre-bill shows the guests what they owe. It is not a receipt: the sale, its number and its receipt are made only when the check is paid.
Send to the kitchen
- Add the items to the check. New items are marked New.
- Press Send to kitchen (F4 on a keyboard). On a phone the button reads Send with the number of items.
- Each station gets one ticket with its own items, the table or order number, the guests, the waiter, and each item's choices and note. On a kitchen screen the items appear at once.
- The lines change to Sent. With After sending, go back to the tables on, a phone returns to the Tables list.
Courses: hold and fire
With Courses on, an item of the first course is sent with the next send, and an item of a later course stays on the check, Held until Fire. When the table is ready for the next course, press Fire on the check's bar; the button names the next held course, such as Fire: Mains. The kitchen gets that course's items on a ticket marked FIRE.
Fire now, on a held item's menu, fires that item's course at once.
When a ticket does not print
A ticket the printer did not confirm raises a notice on the till that names the station and the table, with Retry, Send to backup and Mark handled. A ticket sent again after a doubtful first try is marked COPY - may be duplicate, so the kitchen does not make it twice. Stations, printers and the backup station are set up as kitchen printers explains.
Taking an item back after it was sent
Void (sent)…, on the item's menu, asks for a reason and prints a VOID ticket at the station that had the item, with the reason and who voided it. If the kitchen had started the item, it is recorded as waste. Voiding a sent item needs a permission the Waiter and Cashier roles do not have as standard.
The pre-bill
- Press Pre-bill (Ctrl+P on a keyboard). It prints on the shop's pre-bill printer, the kitchen station set to print pre-bills, or on this device's own printer when the shop has none.
- It is marked PRE-BILL, NOT A RECEIPT at the top and the bottom, in Arabic and English.
- It lists the items with their choices, the subtotal, any discount, the service charge with its rate, the tax as an estimate and the total, with the table, the number of guests and the waiter.
- With Show the suggested tips on the pre-bill on, it prints each suggested tip with the amount it comes to, worked out on the subtotal, before the service charge and the tax.
- The Footer line from Restaurant settings prints at the bottom.
- A second pre-bill for the same check is marked Reprint 2, and so on.
- The table then shows Bill printed, and on a phone it moves to Needs attention until it is paid.
Changes after the pre-bill
Items can still be added, moved or voided after a pre-bill, so print a new one if the guests should see the new total. Every void, removal or move made after a pre-bill is listed in the Changes after a pre-bill report, with who made it and the pre-bill's total, so a manager can check them; see restaurant reports.
Questions and answers
- Is the pre-bill a receipt or an invoice?
- No. It is a list of what the guests owe, marked PRE-BILL, NOT A RECEIPT. The sale, its number and its receipt are made only when the check is paid.
- Can the pre-bill show what each guest owes?
- Not yet: it shows the whole check. To bill the guests separately, split the check and pay each part as its own sale, as splitting a check explains.
- What if the kitchen printer is off when we send?
- The till shows that the ticket was not printed, with Retry, Send to backup and Mark handled. The items stay sent on the check, so nothing has to be entered again.
